The Magic of Myth exhibit has been touring the United States and Europe for some time now. It was during a trip to MacWorld in '96 that I first saw a glimpse of the exhibit in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (at the time I think it was called "The Art of Star Wars") -- a life size speeder bike, complete with scout trooper, were suspended in the window that faced the street. It was incredible. Because of time limitations on that trip, my art director and I could only briefly step into the lobby of the exhibit. I was there on the right day, at the right time, and I certainly had the money to pay for the entrance. But we were on a tight schedule, and so we had to leave.
It was three years before the Magic of Myth came to the Southern California area where I live. I made my way to San Diego in early November '99. I took pictures. Not those pictures you can see in any Chronicles book, but the pictures I've always wanted. The closeup shots that demonstrate the amazing hard work that went into the creation of these production models and props. These are some of those disembodied details.
