..: The Road Never Stops Arriving
..:

We have a Gateway Destination computer in the South conference room. It's basically a really, really overgrown PC that's spouting AV inputs and outputs all over it. When we first got the beast, we were very pleased. It sports a whopping 31" monitor, DVD ROM, Boston satellite speakers ... it was great.

But today, we tried to play a tape. It isn't just any tape, it's our lunchtime entertainment video - a bootlegged copy of a recent Keanu sci-fi thriller. So we have only about 30 lunchtime minutes to enjoy the video, and we spend exactly 20 minutes frustrated at this infernal Gateway computer. First, we had to boot the computer up, because some lame brain had turned it off. You have to boot the machine for the AV input from the VCR to work. So once we have the Gateway booted and the special AV software loads, we have to do several clicks to activate the VCR feed. Only, we don't have a video signal, just sound. This has happened before, Ian says, so we have to reboot. Which takes another several minutes. By now, I'm done with my lunch. And I'm just dreaming about the good old days when we only had RCA cables connecting the VCR to the TV. It was either connected or not. On or off. It didn't used to be this complicated. Ugh.
