Today on my way home from kj's in Culver City, i came to an intersection where cars were moving more slowly. Strange, i thought, seeing gridlock at 9pm on a saturday night. as i got closer to the intersection, i saw that the stopped cars were in a post-collision pose, the spent dancers being a minivan and a truck. both pretty damaged. and then there were the helpers -- people who had seen the accident, stopped their cars and came out to help. there were maybe a half dozen men out there, who probably weren't involved in the accident at all. instead, they were standing there directing traffic, talking to the wounded, and other things. i gingerly made my way around them, and drove on to the freeway.

i liked what i saw. people coming to help. about 8 years ago, i was on another street in Culver City, Venice Blvd. a man drifted off (or something) behind the wheel of his '79 accord and ran up into the grass medium. his car came to an ugly stop. from nowhere, i saw people coming to help, and not just coming, but _running_ to help this stranger.

tonight, i thought to myself that if somebody i love were to get into a car collision, i would want those people around to help. where do they come from? certainly not from my condo.
